Step One to Getting A Good Night's Sleep: The Epworth Sleepiness Scale

I'm not going to get into the major problems lack of sleep creates on how you look, feel, and live. I've already written an article on my website called 17 Shocking Physical Effects of Sleep Deprivation.

It is a very popular article.

What I do want you to find out today is whether you are...or aren't... one of the estimated 75% of people who is sleep deprived.

Because one of the surprising things sleep doctors know is that most people don't realize just how sleep deprived they are. They don't realize the negative effects chronic sleep deprivation has on their daily lives.

Also, people who suffer from excessive daytime sleepiness are so used to it, they think it's normal.

It's not!

Here's a short quiz that will let you know if you are sleep deprived. This is the starting point for sleeping better. After all, you can't get to where you want to go if you don't know where you are.

This test, the famous Epworth Sleepiness Scale (copyright 1991-1997), was developed by sleep expert Dr. Murray Johns of Australia in 1990.

It's commonly used by sleep researchers to test the sleepiness of their patients. And it is quite accurate.

You're going to give answers to eight situations.

This will determine the likelihood that you would doze off or fall asleep in each of the following situations. Notice that the quiz does not ask how often you fall asleep in these situations, just the chance that you would.

Give your answers in whole numbers. If you're on the fence and thinking, “Gee, I think I'm a 3.5 on this answer,” then give yourself a 4. If you're a 2.25, give yourself a 2.

Simply put a check mark next to the number that first comes to mind. Be honest with yourself too. Follow the instructions below.

Begin the Epworth Sleepiness Scale

How likely are you to doze off or fall asleep in the following situations, in contrast to feeling just tired?

This refers to your usual way of life in recent times.

Even if you haven’t done some of these things recently try to work out how they would have affected you.

It is important that you answer each question as best you can.

*** Sitting and reading

___0 = would never doze
___1 = slight chance of dozing
___2 = moderate chance of dozing
___3 = high chance of dozing

*** Watching TV

___0 = would never doze
___1 = slight chance of dozing
___2 = moderate chance of dozing
___3 = high chance of dozing

*** Sitting, inactive in a public place (such as a theater or a meeting)

___0 = would never doze
___1 = slight chance of dozing
___2 = moderate chance of dozing
___3 = high chance of dozing

*** As a passenger in a car for an hour without a break

___0 = would never doze
___1 = slight chance of dozing
___2 = moderate chance of dozing
___3 = high chance of dozing

***Lying down to rest in the afternoon when circumstances permit

___0 = would never doze
___1 = slight chance of dozing
___2 = moderate chance of dozing
___3 = high chance of dozing

*** Sitting and talking to someone

___0 = would never doze
___1 = slight chance of dozing
___2 = moderate chance of dozing
___3 = high chance of dozing

*** Sitting quietly after a lunch without alcohol

___0 = would never doze
___1 = slight chance of dozing
___2 = moderate chance of dozing
___3 = high chance of dozing

*** In a car, while stopped for a few minutes in the traffic

___0 = would never doze
___1 = slight chance of dozing
___2 = moderate chance of dozing
___3 = high chance of dozing

Now add up your numbers from all eight situations and total your score. By the way, whether you are male or female has no affect on your score.

Tomorrow I will send you an email and tell you what your total means.

In the meantime, you may want to check out my latest article I posted on my website. It's called Can't Sleep? Let's Look At What is Insomnia, Types of Insomnia, and What Causes Insomnia.

Okay, that's it for today's chat. I'm outta' here.

Life is a journey. Keep exploring.
