Why this Food May Be Betterthan A Melatonin Supplement

I just sent out another issue of my Sleep Chat newsletter. I go into detail about using a particular food to boost your melatonin for sleep.

Many melatonin supplements in pill form contain far too much melatonin. So this fruit may be a much better way to get a good night's sleep for many people.

Also, in the newsletter, I included a free, informative health report on this wonderful fruit that also helps with gout, joint pain, muscle pain, and heart health. Just click on the report link and it's yours. Simple.

Take This Important Sleepiness Quiz

Do you recall a time when you drove your car when you were sleepy? Or how many times have your eyes drooped and your head bobbed while you were sitting reading, working, or watching TV?

The point is, during the day you need to be alert to perform your best.

However, estimates are that around 75% of people experience daytime sleepiness when they should be fully alert.

I just published two issues of my Sleep Chat newsletter that address the problem of sleepiness.

The famous Epworth Sleepiness Scale is a short quiz you can take to see whether you have a problem with excess sleepiness. It will only take you a few moments to complete the test.

This is important. Because most people are not aware of how much sleep deprivation affects the way they live, look, and feel.

Sleepiness can be dangerous. So click the link below to take the test and find out how sleepy you may be.

You will see the Sleep Chat Back Issues page.

You must read the November 1 issue first. It's called Step 1 to Better Sleep: Take This Simple Quiz.

Then read the November 2 issue called Your Epworth Sleepiness Scale Score and What It Means.

Can I combine alcohol with melatonin for sleep?

I was asked this question recently.

It surprises me somewhat, but alcohol is frequently used by people to get to sleep. This is a shame.

Alcohol will help you get to sleep and it will do so quickly. The big problem...and it is a really BIG problem...is that the body metabolizes the alcohol while you sleep, thereby reducing its effects.

And as soon as the effects of the alcohol begin to completely wear off, you will invariably wake up. It happens all the time and there is nothing you can do about it.

Most people will wake up...usually after about four hours or so...and will find it difficult to get back to sleep.

This is the classic situation known as sleep maintenance insomnia that I have written about on my website.

As for mixing alcohol with melatonin, this is a terrible idea. Alcohol suppresses the central nervous system. And the very purpose of taking melatonin supplements is to also help sedate you. Combining the two together will definitely have an additive effect which may be unhealthy and lead to grogginess the following day.

So let me say this. Do not use alcohol as a sleep aid. But do try melatonin for sleep to see if it helps you sleep better.

As for melatonin dosage, research is showing that 300 micrograms...which is the same as .3 milligrams...is an effective dose.

Many of the melatonin supplements have large amounts of 5 milligrams or 10 milligrams which, in my opinion, is too much, from what I have read. It appears that lower doses of melatonin may be the better choice for helping with insomnia.

If you have a bottle of pills that has 5 milligram pills, consider cutting the pills into quarters to reduce the dosage.

If you have a question you would like me to research and answer for you, please go to my Contact Me page on my website and send me your question. Thanks.

Why are calcium and magnesium good natural sleeping remedies?

I was asked this question a few days ago so let me briefly answer it here for your benefit too.

Calcium helps to reduce stress, which may help you relax. And combining calcium with magnesium is showing promise in helping people who have chronic insomnia.

One reason may be because magnesium acts as a muscle relaxant and relieves tension. Magnesium also boosts production of the brain neurotransmitter GABA, the calming chemical. GABA helps promote sleep.

There is also evidence that insomnia caused by stress may be due to a deficiency of magnesium. In addition, people who have low levels of magnesium may suffer from fatigue.

The big problem is, most people, at least here in the United States (U.S.), are deficient in both calcium and magnesium. The U.S. Office of Dietary Supplements says that 78% of women over 20 and 55% of men over 20 are not getting enough daily calcium.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says 66% of Americans do not get enough daily magnesium.

You may want to supplement with 600 mg of calcium and 250 mg of magnesium daily to add to what you're getting from your diet for these two minerals. Take these supplements with food.

I get a lot of my calcium from fortified almond milk. But cow's milk and cheese also have loads of calcium. Magnesium rich foods include green leafy vegetables such as spinach, almonds, bananas, and whole grains.

If you have kidney problems, you should consult with your doctor before taking magnesium supplements.

To see other good natural sleeping remedies, see my article, These 9 Natural Sleep Aids May Be Your Best Natural Remedies for Insomnia.
